Have you ever watched someone make a big mistake even after being warned that it was going to all go wrong? A trainwreck or car crash that you know is about to happen. You know that it’s going to be catastrophic but you just cannot look away.
That has been going on at my work lately and I’ve had to force myself to look away because I’m not mentally strong enough to deal with the consequences of others’ actions.
See, the owner is getting up in age and his child (who has never worked in the industry) has taken over the family business.
If you have ever watched shows like Hotel Hell or Kitchen Nightmares (I may be a Gordon Ramsay fan) then you’ll know why it can be a disaster to go into a customer serving business without any customer service experience.
So, I have OCD in a relatively severe manner. And while I am heavily medicated to ensure that I can function in the real world, I still have a lot of difficulty dealing with changes. One of my triggers is changes to my schedule. I realize most people won’t care, but for those who do, hopefully this helps explain why this was so distressing to me.
But they aren’t the ones telling the customers of these changes. It falls on the front desk staff to tell the crew of 60 that we’re only allowed to put out 12 muffins and some fruit instead of our old breakfast which also included bagels, yogurt and cereal.
I mean, after they got some complaints from guests (because we told the guests it was a change from higher up) they changed it back. We just have to continually beg for them to order breakfast supplies because they still think it is a waste of money.
Instead they decided that all the part-time staff members could work full-time hours, even when it conflicted with their other job. Even when medically unable. I believe I was told “It’s just what has to be done. We all have to do it.”
I was not the one who made us understaffed. Why should I have to deal with the consequences of their actions? (spoiler alert I’m not dealing with the fallout.)
Though, it could be worse. They could be doing to the front staff what they are doing with the housekeepers and hire more than we need. Then, when the housekeepers are scheduled, they show up only to be told their shift was given to someone else.
So, needless to say, I am not currently working right now and I’m not handling it quite as well as I think I should be handling it. But I am getting practice at interviewing because I have been applying to any job that is minimum wage or higher.
Hopefully I’ll find a decent job soon because the state of employment and cost of living are getting to be ridiculous. And it’s always nicer to know exactly where you stand.
